Lenormand: The Game of Hope
If you’ve ever had your fortune read with tarot, you owe the experience to Marie-Anne Lenormand, an 18th and 19th century French cartomancer who popularized the art of card divination.

1777
Orphaned at just 5 years old, Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand was placed a Benedictine convent, where it's reported that she began to exhibit prophetic abilities. At the age of 14, she skipped off to Paris, intent on making a living by reading fortunes with a small pack of hand-drawn cards in her pocket. Over time she became known for providing impossibly accurate predictions. Her reputation grew as more and more prominent clientele sought her services, until she became famous amongst royalty as a reader. Despite her popularity and success, she was imprisoned multiple times, mainly for witchcraft and fortune telling. But that did not stop her from achieving extraordinary success.

Upon her death at the age of 71, Lenormand's only heir took the money and burned all of her spiritual belongings, hoping to erase the source of his inheritance.. Yet, Lenormand’s legacy has persisted, in the Le Petit Jeu de Mlle Lenormand (“the small game by Mademoiselle Lenormand”) a 36-card deck, this is still used by many alternative practitioners today.
